Sport a driver for tourism in Montreux since 150 years – exhibition preview

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Montreux Gymnastics Club this year, a dedicated exhibition at the Museum of Montreux, just 25 km away from Lausanne, is now highlighting the important role sport has played for the economic growth, dynamism and well-being of the entire region ever since.

Until November 2017, visitors can discover the first origins of sports in Montreux, the main sports practised in the region, such as gymnastics, local Olympic heroes, important resorts like les Avants and Caux, as well as sport’s impact on the development of the region’s tourist industry. For instance, did you know that at the end of the 19th century, Montreux was already an excellent vacation spot and attracted lots of tourists who needed to be entertained to keep them coming back? This is where sport came in. Very soon after being introduced, these new offers did not only attract the foreigners, but also local people. Go back to the roots and pass by the Museum of Montreux!

In addition, the 150th anniversary of the Montreux Gymnastics club is being celebrated in the region with special events throughout the year. Next “stop”: Switzerland’s best artistic gymnasts will compete during the “Journées Vaudoises de Gymnastique Artistique” on 29 and 30 April 2017 in Clarens.
