Sailing is almost as much an art as a science. In a race opposing two yachts, both with cutting-edge technology, the tactician’s choices make all the difference. Based on experience, available measuring tools, information by teammates and his or her own instinct, the tactician’s job is to select the fastest possible course to secure victory.

For many years EPFL Chair of Probabilities (PROB) has been working on a mathematical model to help the team to select the best course, taking into account wind fluctuations and the opponent’s position.
